BMG Warns of Dangerous Waves

TEMPO Interactive, Denpasar: Following an accident involving two boats in Balinese waters, the Denpasar Section III Meteorological and Geophysical Agency has stated that waves in this area are still dangerous for boat traffic.

The 3.5 meter high waves will continue during the next two days.

Data and Information Chief, Sutrisno, said there was different air pressure between Australia and Asia and this was affecting wind speeds.

He went on to say the wind speeds would determine the height of the waves.

“Wind speeds of 23 knots often happen during the dry season,” he said in Denpasar, Monday, (14/7).

High waves will occur in the Indian Ocean from southern Bali to East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

In these areas, waves are predicted to be 2 to 3.5 meters high, while in northern Bali, the Bali Strait, the Lombok Strait , the Sape Strait, and the Flores Sea, waves are predicted to be 0,75 to 2.5 meters high.

These conditions will pose dangers to sea traffic, especially small boats.

BMG has warned ports and Water Police in Bali.

“We can only warn them, we cannot keep them from sailing,” Sutrisno said.
