Indonesia Wins Gold Medals at Science Olympiad

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Three teams from Indonesia attended the science Olympiad. They won a gold, five silver, and three bronze medals, and two honorable mentions for the category of Math, Biology, and Chemistry. While at the 19th International Biology Olympiad in Mumbai, India, on 13-20 July 2008, Indonesia won two silver medals. The Olympiad was attended by 55 countries involving 220 students.

The silver medal winners are Anugerah Erlaut (student from Kharisma Bangsa High School, Tangerang) and I Made Dwi Ariawan (student from Tabanan High School, Bali). The bronze was won by Yanuar Dwi from Semesta High School in Semarang, and Satria Cahyadari from High School 9 in Yogyakarta.

“Basically, the achievement is a surprise,” said Director of High Schools at the National Education Department, Sungkowo Mujiamanu yesterday. “This is first time for Indonesia attending the international biology competition.”

The Indonesian team also won one gold medal, one silver, and a bronze at the chemistry international Olympiad in Hungary, on July 12-20. The team was represented by Vincentius Jeremy Suhardy ( St Louis 1 High School, Surabaya), Ariana Dwi Candra ( 1 Pati High School, Central Java), Zulkarnaen ( Leuwiliang High School, Bogor), and Kelvin Anggara ( Sutomo 1 High School, Medan). The competition was attended by 70 countries.

At the Math International Olympiad in Madrid, Spain, on July 10-22, Indonesia won one silver , two bronze, and two honorable mentions. The silver medal was achieved by Andreas Dwi Maryanto G from Kolese Santo Yusup High School in Malang, the bronze was won by Fahmy Fuady from Pribadi High School in Bandung, and Aldrian Obaja from 1 BPK Penabur High School, Jakarta.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Joseph Andreas from 1 BPK Penabur High School, Jakarta, and Sa’aadah Sajjana Carita from Semesta High School in Semarang. The competition was attended by 100 countries.
