Megawati calls for application of Pancasila values in world

Jakarta, (ANTARA News) - Former president Megawati Soekarnoputri said she hoped the values contained in Pancasila, Indonesia`s state ideology, can also be implemented in the world for the sake of humanity and global peace.

Megawati expressed the hope in her speech at the International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) at the Borobudur Hotel here Wednesday.

She said Indonesia was a nation with diverse cultures but despite the cultural differences its many ethnic groups were able to live side by side through the years.

Sectarian conflicts had admittedly happened in Indonesia but the country was eventually able to overcome the problems, she said.

According to the Indonesian Democracy Party-Struggle (PDIP) leader, conflicts in the world were getting worse day by day due to misunderstandings between the west and Islam.

Therefore, she said she hoped Pancasila could also become a reference for he world. "We as Indonesians will not lose faith in Pancasila, and it would be good if the world also implements it," she said.

She believed that peace and harmony could be reached if the five principles of Pancasila -- belief in God, humanity, unity, democracy and social justice -- were applied in the world.

Pancasila was expected to become a reference for the world to build better conditions for different nations to live side by side, she said.

On the occasion, Megawati was accompanied among others by Hasyim Muzadi, chairman of the central executive board of Nadhatul Ulama (NU, the largest Muslim organization in Indonesia) who is also the ICIS`s secretary general.(*)
